Design Statement

My poster design for Essence of the Familiar, a surreal sci-fi drama, visually captures the film’s theme of shifting reality through a dreamlike composition. I initially didn’t think this would be a project I would enjoy, but I’m very happy with the outcome. It was one of the most detailed and challenging projects I’ve worked on, especially when it came to creating a sense of realism within such an impossible scene. The design blends at least seven photographic elements, urban landscapes, map textures, clocks, and clouds into a cohesive, surreal image using masking, color grading, and lighting effects in Photoshop. A cool, desaturated palette with warm amber highlights enhances the mysterious atmosphere, while bold serif typography for the title and clean sans-serif text for the tagline and credits create a cinematic hierarchy. The vertical layout guides the viewer from grounded reality at the bottom to surreal imagination at the top, symbolizing the protagonist’s journey through a world that constantly rewrites itself.
