Symbol & Logotype

Design Statement

For this project, I developed a symbol, logotype, and combination mark inspired by the axolotl. I chose the axolotl because of its unique form, recognizable features, and strong symbolic associations with regeneration, adaptability, and curiosity. The project began with close observation and simplified drawings, where I reduced the axolotl to its most essential visual elements its soft body shape, external gills, and gentle silhouette while maintaining recognizability. From there, I explored abstraction by transforming these key characteristics into a more refined and graphic form, pushing beyond literal representation toward a clear, memorable symbol that communicates the spirit of the axolotl rather than just its appearance. In developing the logotype, I experimented with subtle typographic manipulation to create a visual rhythm that reflects the organic, fluid nature of the subject without turning the letterforms into illustrations. The final combination mark integrates the abstract symbol and logotype in a consistent spatial relationship, creating a cohesive identity. Color was used thoughtfully to enhance the mark and reinforce the axolotl’s calm, aquatic character. Overall, this project strengthened my ability to simplify complex forms, think conceptually, and create a clear visual language, and I genuinely enjoyed the process of refining the axolotl into a distinctive and meaningful design.
